PhD Dissertation:

To acquire a degree in Doctorate of Philosophy, in any subject, a dissertation is mandatory. Presenting a dissertation for a PhD degree is a universal law prevalent across the globe in all universities. There are no alternatives to it. Differences occur in the quality of the dissertations. That, however, depends on the topic chosen and the quality and quantity of research conducted.  The topic of a dissertation must be unique, such that it is not presented anywhere else. The topic can have a similar trajectory of thoughts but nevertheless it has to be different.

A PhD dissertation is a technical work. It uses a series of documentations to prove one’s theories or hypothesis. The hypothesis is proved through carefully studied and thoroughly analyzed claims. Thus every aspect or point of a dissertation must have sufficient literature to validate the claims made. Experimental data, if used in the research, becomes concrete evidence.

The hypothesis is the most crucial part. It is a theorem, which the scholar is determined to prove. The dissertation shall argue for the hypothesis and often it might come up with contradictory results. Once the statement is finalized, the rest of the dissertation revolves around it.

There are many styles for writing a PhD dissertation. The APA Style and the Chicago style are the most common ones. Every university has their own manual which clearly defines the prescribed formats to which students must adhere to, so that their dissertation is sanctioned.

However, no matter which style of writing is followed, a PhD dissertation must have the required sections. There must be a section of acknowledgements, abstract, hypothesis, introduction, the main body (segmented into chapters) and a conclusion. The table of contents, figures, lists of tables, et all of course is there.
